Red-listed duck winters in Zelenograd again

Specialists of "Mosnature" have called the fact of regular wintering of the male red Teal-Whistler, the smallest duck of European part of Russia – in the valley of the Skhodnya river in Zelenograd, an extremely rare phenomenon. This extremely rare bird has been wintering in Moscow district for several years. And now, in a recent "census" of waterfowl birds on the river Skhodnya,  lovers of nature have found the representative of the red book in Zelenograd again.

– The fact, that ducks are wintering in Moscow, is not a secret for anybody. Especially mallards, which are feed by citizens. In ice-free areas of the Moscow river a small amount of ducks, Goldeneyes, tufted ducks and other Pochards also remain on the wintering grounds. Here's an example of wintering of red-Teal-Teal for several years noted in Zelenograd. And it's a very rare phenomenon, - told the employees "Mosnature".

For the first time, the common Teal was found on the river Skhodnya in 2013. It belongs to the first category of rarity as a species that is under the threat of total destruction. The bird has a length of 38 cm, her neck is short and the wings are narrow and pointed. It's weight is about  2.5-3 times smaller than the mallards have. Narrow wings of Teal allow it to fly almost vertically and to land on any area, that is inaccessible to other ducks.

All in all Zelenograd and the employees of "Mosnature"  have counted 75 ducks in the valley of the river Skhodnya. 74 of them were mallards, and only one was the common Teal. They have also found 11 thousand ducks remaining for wintering in Moscow.
