Micron JSC is planning to build a cutting-edge electronic chips production factory

Zelenograd scientific enterprise Micron JSC keeps on leading the active policy in fields of import substitution and technology development. Recently our online newspaper reported that the city of Zelenograd will lunch the production of electronic chips for the National System of payment and bank cards, developing the concurrence with well-known American, European and Asian brands. Today's news is no less relevant: Micron JSC intends to build a Russian factory for the 28 nm type electronic chips production, thereby compete with the world leaders such as Qualcomm, Samsung and Altera, which produce electronic chips for iPhone, Samsung, Sony and HTC.

According to the “Kommersant” newspaper with reference to the company’s representative Alexey Dianov, the project cost is 1.5 billion dollars. Neither Micron JSC, nor financial corporation "System" will be able to implement such an expensive project by own forces. Therefore, the company requested the federal government’s support – the draft is being currently discussed in the Ministry of Industry and Trade, Ministry of Economic Development and Ministry of Finance.

A meeting on the microelectronics development chaired by President Vladimir Putin will be held in July. Within this event a discussion on the construction of the 28 nm electronic chips production factory on the territory of Russia will take place.

This information was confirmed by a Kremlin source. According to the “Kommersant” newspaper’s interlocutor, with a deep modernization of existing factories it is possible to reach the chip manufacturing technology of 45 nm, but 28 nm type requires a fundamentally new, greenfield production.

Today Micron JSC Zelenograd is engaged in mass production of 90 nm chips, and this year it plans to launch production of 65 nm chips. The volume of Russian microelectronics market in the world figure is only 0.4%, which gives Russian technologies great prospects for development.

Alexei Dianov said that despite the "openness" of Micron JSC, Zelenograd company will seek to work for the sake of Russia. "We are open for everything: in case foreign developers come to us, we will give them the design rules and will carry out their orders. But first and foremost, of course, we will work in behalf of national design centers, "- explains Dianov to the reporter of the "Kommersant "newspaper.

According to experts, the plant Micron JSC has to produce about 10 million electronic chips per day to reach the breakeven in the next 5-7 years.
