Sitronics Microelectronics & STMicroelectronics summarize results of 5-year cooperation and announce plans of further business development

JSC Mikron, a major manufacturer and exporter of microelectronics in Russia and CIS, part of industrial holding “RTI systems” together with STMicroelectronics, world leader in microelectronics, offering to its clients full range of microelectronic components, have summarized results of 5-year cooperation in the area of technology transfer, design and marketing, and have announced their plans of development in Russia.

The aim of production of 180-90nm chip facilities was to enter new markets with of new class microchips manufacturing and new customers attraction. When the project started in 2007  In Russia there were no qualified engineers in this sphere, no equipment service centers, even no infrastructure to start 8 inch wafers chips manufacturing. ST support and expertise has played a key role in the successful project implementation and as of today Sitronics Microelectronics is the Russian company number 1 in RFID production, telecom cards production and smartcards production with high safety degree (identification, social and payment cards).

Expansion of technical facilities allows the company to plan entering to new markets, one of the fast developing segments is a segment of components for image sensors and devices of intellectual video processing. Small-type devices of video monitoring are used in gadgets, medical devices, in energy efficient smart devices for streets lighting and free spaces detecting at parking areas etc. In 2011 this market was estimated at the level of 300 billion US dollars with annual growth of about 20%, large infrastructure projects (such as ”intelligent house”, “intelligent city”, and “safe road”) are drivers of the growth. Sitronics Microelectronics plans to create a joint venture in Russia for developing and producing of image sensors and intellectual video processing devices. It considers leading producers of microelectronics as potential partners in the area of R&D, technology and manufacture.

The project is characterized by high research intensity – in the course of its implementation new technologies of image sensors production will be developed, as well as logic chips of signal processing, 3D assembling technologies, and complicated soft for specific applications. “It is expected that dozens of Russian innovative companies will take part in the cooperative project – optics manufacturers, system integrators and artificial intelligence developers”, Mr. Gennagy Krasnikov, Sitronics Microelectronics General Director pointed out.

The project will be implemented at several stages. First provides for setting up of a joint R&D center followed by manufacturing facilities deployment. R&D center will consist of 20 to 30 residents - developers of chips and systems , and the joint venture can later become a resident of  “Skolkovo” Innovation Center.
